Our Woman In Jazz

A frequent topic of discussion and list-making, I figured I'd put together my own contribution to the acknowledgement of women in jazz, focused on female composer/instrumentalists, not vocalists.

Mary Halvorson - Crack in the Sky (No. 11) from Saturn Sings (2010)

Matana Roberts - Exhange from The Chicago Project (2008)

Maria Schneider - Evanescence from Evanescence (1994)

Geri Allen - Lonely Woman from Etudes (with Charlie Haden and Paul Motian) (1988)

Carla Bley - Hotel Overture from Escalator Over The Hill (1971)

Alice Coltrane - Turiya and Ramakrishna from Ptah the El Daoud (1970)

Blitzkrieg Bop

For those who like their music a little...heavier, here's a collection of jazz with large doses of metal/hardcore/noise-rock influence.

Zu - Carbon from Carboniferous (2009)

The Thing - Hidegen Fujnak a Szelek from Bag It! (2009)

The Flying Luttenbachers - Demonic Velocities/20,000,000 Volts from Destroy All Music (1994)

Painkiller - Parish Of Tama (Ossuary Dub) from Execution Ground (1994)

Last Exit - Discharge from Last Exit (1986)

Repeater - Blood Orange

Finally picked up another album lead by Todd Sickafoose, whose Tiny Resistors I've loved since it came out in 2008. It's an earlier album, Blood Orange from 2006, and predictably I've found it similarly addictive. It features the talents of Adam Benjamin and Ben Wendel (both of Kneebody), Nels Cline, and Ches Smith among others. Here's Microscopic Horses, the seventh track on the album:

Funk Fridays - Chuck Brown

A sad day as we say goodbye to the godfather of Go-Go, Chuck Brown. Here's Bustin' Loose.

Hear, O Israel

I've noticed I've been picking up a lot of great new creative jazz from Israeli musicians, so I figured I'd put together a little post featuring them, as is my style.

Avishai Cohen (trumpet) - Parto Forte from After The Big Rain (2007)

Avishai Cohen (bass) - Chutzpan from Gently Disturbed (2008)

Omer Avital - Arrival from The Ancient Art of Giving (2006)

Yaron Herman - Paluszki from A Time For Everything (2007)

Gilad Hekselman - Hazelnut Eyes from Hearts Wide Open (2011)

Funk Fridays - Catalyst

Recently discovered the 70s group Catalyst through the presence of Odean Pope, whose Saxophone Choir I've been listening to, discovered in turn through his presence in Max Roach's 80s quartet. Their stuff runs the gamut from pretty straight ahead instrumental and vocal-based funk (featured here), fusion-y ballads, to some damn fine kozmigroov. Here's Ain't It The Truth from their first, self-titled album:

Jazz Covers - Full Bands

Since I already put together a post on jazz piano trios doing covers of rock and pop songs, I figured I'd put one together of larger groups doing these covers. Still working on the more comprehensive list, I'll be posting it sometime soon, though since new covers are coming out all the time it'll never be truly finished.

Christian Scott - The Eraser (Thom Yorke)

James Carter - Platform Blues (Pavement)

SFJAZZ Collective - Superstition (Stevie Wonder)

Ben Williams - Little Susie (Michael Jackson)

Joshua Redman - The Crunge (Led Zeppelin)
